Preventing Porta-Potty Tip-Overs

Preventing Porta-Potty Tip-Overs

It happens ? porta-potties get tipped over either by vandals, high winds, or unstable ground that has become too soft due to excessive rains.  Out of those three reasons, high winds get the dubious honor of being the most-frequent culprit involved in porta-potty tip-overs.  Whatever the reason may be for this unwanted situation, finding your rented or owned porta-potty on its side, with an unsavory mess strewn about, is not what anyone would, ever, want to face.

If you are renting a porta-potty from Chem Can that has tipped over, the first course of action would be to contact one of our offices at 817-568-2333 or 214-935-9017. We will resolve the issue, immediately.

What Can You Do to Prevent Tip-Overs?

One should ensure any porta-potty tip-overs become as much of a challenge, as possible.  Here are a few suggestions:

1.  Utilize A Sturdy Structure:  Some porta-potty units are equipped with components that prevent tipping.  Specific features on the porta-potty units are designed to be used to secure the unit to stationary items such as poles, heavy-duty fences, buildings, etc.  One can, also, position the porta-potties up against brick walls or other sturdy structures to help combat strong winds.  Also, placing multiple porta-potties beside each other will provide additional support.

2.  Stake Down the Units:  Some porta-potties can be staked into the ground to prevent high winds from blowing them over.  This involves specialized stakes that have the appearance of robust, over-sized staples that fit over the porta-potties' skids and are pounded into the ground.  Staking down, also, helps to discourage vandals from having 'too much fun' by maximizing the effort it would take to tip over the porta-potties, in the first place.

There is, virtually, nothing that OSHA overlooks, and that includes how to correctly stake down a porta-potty.  OSHA has regulations that detail acceptable and unacceptable ways to do this since some make-shift stake-down methods can turn into dangerous trip hazards.   Be sure you are informed of how to, properly, stake down porta-potties in order to conform to OSHA requirements.

3.  Place on a Level Surface:  It can't be overstressed:  make sure any porta-potties are positioned on level, compacted ground or a flat, paved surface.  Always think proactively and take into account how the terrain may shift during a heavy rain.

4.  Utilize a Dedicated Enclosure:  If your porta-potty will be used in an on-going manner, such as usage at a construction site, a golf-course, or other venue where porta-potties are always available, having an enclosure to protect the porta-potty from tip-overs is an ideal solution to keep the units in place.  Three-sided enclosures can be aesthetically constructed of wood, thereby, providing optimal protection from howling winds as well as making intentional tip-overs by vandals far less tempting.

5.  Enhance Security:  Keeping porta-potties' doors padlocked after usage hours is a simple, yet effective, way to thwart pranksters from doing their destruction. When porta-potties are left unattended, overnight, they become vulnerable and padlocks, at the very least, will prevent trouble-makers from entering.  Providing temporary fencing or barricades is one more step one can take to encourage
vandals to look, elsewhere, for their kicks.
