Avoid these Typical Porta-Potty Planning Mistakes

You want your outdoor event to be a complete success.  Part of achieving that success is making sure porta-potties will be on-site to accommodate guests' needs.  It's important that some common porta-potty mistakes are avoided to ensure the success you desperately want, becomes fully realized.

Here are three mistakes that you'll want to avoid:

#1 Mistake:  Not Enough Porta-Potties!

Party planners can, easily, underestimate how many porta-potties would be required for any given event.  Too few porta-potties during an event can be awkward, at the very least ? especially during more formal affairs such as outdoor weddings.  Long wait lines can lead to some guests resorting to relieving themselves in the great outdoors ? not what any bride or groom would wish upon their very special day.

If one considers JUST the number of anticipated guests to determine how many porta-potties to be rented, this #1 mistake with planning will cause lots and lots of frustration.  It is very important to go beyond just anticipated guests and take into account these two additional considerations:

1)  If more women will be in attendance, than men, you'll want to consider one or more porta-potties.  Research from Belgium's Ghent University reveals that women, commonly, take anywhere from 50% to 100%  longer in restrooms than men. During restroom time, women: chat more than men; they wash their hands far more often than men, and they primp more frequently and in more time-consuming ways than men.  In other words, one can expect longer porta-potty wait lines unless the correct number of porta-potties are available from the get-go.

3)  If alcoholic beverages will be served, it's a no-brainer that attendees will need to use the restrooms far more often.   If alcohol will flow, one should add 15-20% more restrooms. In other words, if your event will offer 10 porta-potties, adding 20% more would be 2 extra units ? and, yes, it would be worth it since your reputation and each guest's impression of the event would ride on the ambiance you provide.

#2 Mistake: Not Considering Thoughtful Placement

Any party planner would want to visualize a 'bird's-eye' view of the physical layout of the event to help determine where all the porta-potty units would be placed.  Will all the porta-potties be in one location? Will the porta-potties be in a variety of locations? Smaller events can get away porta-potties in one area, while large events should have the units placed in multiple locales.  Also, will all locations for the port-potties be on solid ground? Will porta-potties for a multi-day event be safe from looters or vandals?

If not enough thought goes into the porta-potty placement, unintended consequences can occur:  1) sinking porta-potties resting in mud due to a torrential rain 2) porta-potties not secured to the ground that are overturned on unusually windy days ? it's always a good idea to pay attention to the weather forecast 3) porta-potties that are maliciously damaged or destroyed by pranksters who found porta

potties unprotected and vulnerable without security fencing, heavy barricades, etc.

Also, at times, party planners can forget that a clear path must be available before the pick-up crew arrives to retrieve the units.  Since retrieval is an on-time activity, delays in being able to remove porta-potties could lead to additional costs. By thinking proactively, any unintended consequences can be avoided and the success of your event can be maximized!

#3 Mistake:  Not Prioritizing Sanitation Expectations

If there is one thing people insist on when they attend an outdoor festivity, it's cleanliness!  If your porta-potties aren't kept clean, you'll lose revenue the next time your event is held since cleanliness ? or the lack of it ? will determine who returns to your next event.  In other words, take great care about what your porta-potties look like and smell like.

Making sure your porta-potties are well stocked with the basics is vital.  Don't be hesitant to ask how many rolls of TP will be included with each porta-potty unit.  Make sure your porta-potty units provide, at the very least, hand-sanitizers (some high-end portable restrooms have sinks with soap and running water).  You may even opt for portable hand-washing stations to enhance cleanliness.

Any porta-potties that will be used for more than a day will require regular sanitizing to keep your units clean, fresh-smelling, and welcoming.  It's all about keeping your guests happy, and happy guests are repeat guests.
